Breaking Free: My Journey from Control to Courage

Marriage is often painted as a journey of love, companionship, and mutual respect. But sometimes, it becomes a cage—one built not just by a partner but by those who hold power within a household. My story is not just about a failed marriage; it’s about reclaiming my dignity, faith, and peace after enduring an environment designed to break my spirit.

From the very beginning, privacy was a luxury I wasn’t allowed. There were no locks on the bathroom doors, and even the most intimate moments with my husband were under surveillance. His mother watched, controlled, and invaded every aspect of my life, from how I dressed to how I practiced my faith. I wasn’t allowed to offer Fajr prayer or wear my hijab—practices that had always grounded me. Even the basic act of personal hygiene, like removing pubic hair, required her permission. When I once did so without asking, she created a humiliating scene in front of the maid, saying, "My son doesn’t mind your hairs down there during the deed." I often wondered—what kind of conversations existed between mother and son?

My husband reinforced her control. Before any personal decision, I had to seek his mother’s approval. He even showed her my undergarments, commenting on their cost, as if my dignity had a price tag. Sanitary pads became another battleground—"Too expensive," she claimed, as though self-care was a luxury I didn’t deserve. She ensured he spent nothing on me, not out of financial strain, but as a form of control.

Faith, my source of strength, was stripped away. I wasn't allowed to recite the Quran—the very words that had always given me peace. Knowing I had an allergy to matchstick fumes, she deliberately lit them near me, smiling as I struggled. Her demands extended beyond the household—insisting I work a job from 9 PM to 5 AM while keeping it a secret from my husband. And through it all, conversations circled back to one topic—sex. There was no modesty, no boundaries, just an unsettling obsession that made the house feel less like a home and more like a prison.

For a long time, I questioned myself—Is this what marriage is meant to be? But the moment I chose khula, I chose myself. I chose peace, freedom, and the right to live without fear or humiliation. Today, I am rebuilding my life—focusing on my skincare brand, LushKa, writing articles and poems that reflect both my pain and my healing. The journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s mine, and for the first time in a long while, I feel whole.

If you're reading this and find echoes of your own life within my words, know this: you deserve better. You deserve peace, privacy, and respect. And if choosing yourself means walking away, know that freedom—though hard-won—is worth every step.
